{"id":750,"date":"2014-12-22T14:46:18","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T14:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/blog\/?p=750"},"modified":"2023-12-29T09:01:10","modified_gmt":"2023-12-29T09:01:10","slug":"untold-truth-translation-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/blog\/study-materials-translation\/untold-truth-translation-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"The Untold Truth of Translation Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past week alone you&#8217;ve conveyed hundreds of thoughts, images and ideas to other people using language.\u00a0Unfortunately, this is often a one-sided act.\u00a0What you probably don&#8217;t often think about are the lenses that other people look through &#8211; the personal experiences, values, and perceptions that impact how they receive your messages.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if I say \u201cyellow lab,\u201d an image is conjured in your head. Everyone has a particular image based on their own personal experiences. Each of these images will likely manifest differently. Is your dog of a certain breed and color running? Swimming? Shaking off water? Each of these different images represents a variant of the same idea.<\/p>\n<p>This variability can cause language to be a very imperfect medium. It&#8217;s no small feat to be able to effectively and accurately communicate a concept with two parties understanding the same language. It is exponentially more difficult across <em>multiple<\/em>\u00a0languages.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true for your patient materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do translation projects go awry?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/what-we-do\/clinical-translation-management\/\">translation<\/a> wasn&#8217;t complex enough, there are many other factors that can and will complicate your translation projects further.<\/p>\n<p>Most translation projects contain the following factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>many files<\/li>\n<li>many versions<\/li>\n<li>many languages<\/li>\n<li>multiple project timelines<\/li>\n<li>multiple project phases<\/li>\n<li>scope change<\/li>\n<li>a sense of urgency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re\u00a0going into 15 countries with 20 languages, a basic translation process can easily turn five source files into over 300 files.\u00a0These 300 files all need to be tracked, version controlled, and managed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and this is all assuming a smooth and quiet process &#8211; which we all know is rarely the case!<\/p>\n<p>From there, you add in additional factors specific to the clinical trial arena, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>different timelines for each component<\/li>\n<li>protocol amendments<\/li>\n<li>lack of necessary information, for example, which countries the study is going into<\/li>\n<li>lack of standard local needs<\/li>\n<li>managing sponsor vs. IRB\/EC vs. site edits<\/li>\n<li>industry-specific acronyms and phrases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A lot of these are true realities of translation\u00a0projects, but the additional costs and headaches that go with them can be avoided with certain know-how and a desire to invest in your translation project ahead of time.\u00a0Check out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/a-checklist-for-preparing-your-next-translation-project\/\">part two<\/a> of this post where I give some pointers for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past week alone you&#8217;ve conveyed hundreds of thoughts, images and ideas to other people using language.\u00a0Unfortunately, this is often a one-sided act.\u00a0What you probably don&#8217;t often think about are the lenses that other people look through &#8211; the personal experiences, values, and perceptions&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":69713,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[81],"tags":[554,1957,1960,1567,79,105,1958,1955,253,454,1956,1959,254,255],"class_list":["post-750","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-study-materials-translation","tag-cross-cultural-communication","tag-cultural-adaptation","tag-global-content","tag-language-services","tag-life-science-translation","tag-linguistic-validation","tag-localization-strategies","tag-multilingual-content","tag-patient-materials","tag-translation-challenges","tag-translation-management","tag-translation-pitfalls","tag-translation-project","tag-translators"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>The Untold Truth of Translation Projects - Imperial Clinical Research Services Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Translation projects are no small feat.
