Not surprisingly, decentralized clinical trial approaches has the spotlight here. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wearables and sensors for remote data collection<\/li>\n<li>Mobile screening units<\/li>\n<li>Home trial visits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also in the spotlight at the DIA meeting is the rise of machines! OK, that was dramatic. Not so much machines, but the overwhelming presence of exhibitors and presentation themes focused around technology-based study solutions.<\/p>\n<p>And why not? These clinical trial tools are exciting and focused on the future.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Current realities in clinical trials<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When we speak with our clients and friends in the industry, they tell us that technological solutions, while important to the future, aren\u2019t ready to scale just yet, or sponsor companies aren\u2019t ready for them. Presenters speak in generalities about the adoption rates of many of the newer approaches and the return on investment seen. The evidence of success is a bit lacking, but we all know it will get there. It needs to get there.<\/p>\n<p>However\u2026<\/p>\n<p>As the world continues to re-open, so does the traditional clinical trials industry, and with it, the various traditional components that make over 95 percent of clinical trials tick. I\u2019m referring to the nuts and bolts of research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sponsors<\/li>\n<li>CROs<\/li>\n<li>Sites<\/li>\n<li>Specialty vendors<\/li>\n<li>Patients<\/li>\n<li>Trials spread across the globe<\/li>\n<li>Logistics challenges<\/li>\n<li>On-time study starts<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These key components persist as the industry works to evolve into what it needs to be in the future.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>DIA Meeting participants discuss challenges in today\u2019s clinical trials<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The sponsors and CROs I spoke with at the DIA Meeting are challenged in areas like enrollment and retention of patients in clinical trials for increasingly complex protocols, rare diseases, and oncology studies.<\/p>\n<p>They are struggling with on-time study starts and getting the materials and ancillary supplies that sites need on time, across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>They are struggling with getting messaging right. The future is bright. Innovation in engagement and<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_69977\" style=\"width: 334px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69977\" class=\"wp-image-69977\" style=\"text-align: center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dia-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dia-4.jpeg 348w, https:\/\/www.imperialcrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dia-4-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-69977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FDA commissioner Robert Califf, M.D. speaks at the DIA Meeting opening session.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>operations are driving our thinking, and that\u2019s a good thing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-organization\/robert-califf\">Robert Califf, M.D<\/a>., commissioner of the FDA, said it best during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diaglobal.org\/en\/flagship\/dia-2022\/program\/schedule\/agenda\">opening session<\/a>: \u201cHope is created through the combination of medicine, science, and human effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of hope for the future of drug development shared by the industry people who have come here to relate their experiences and capabilities. We are collaborating on innovative paths forward. This is a challenging and inspiring time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please take a look at my walkthrough video.
