Every detail is important, including the technical task of managing lot and expiry. Some think lot and expiry\u00a0are\u00a0important only when it comes to medication. Not so! Lot tracking and product expiry management of medical ancillary devices and disposables\u00a0are\u00a0critical &#8212; and of\u00a0course,\u00a0helps safeguard patients.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The truth is,\u00a0many companies or organizations fail to accurately track medical ancillary devices in regards to\u00a0lot\u00a0and expiry as well as equipment serial numbers and calibration\/preventative maintenance data. This can lead to compliance issues and patient safety concerns. The FDA has mandated that:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cManufacturers are required to track certain devices from their manufacture through the distribution chain when they receive an order from the\u202fFood and Drug Administration (FDA)\u202fto implement a tracking system for a certain type of device. The purpose of device tracking is to ensure that manufacturers of certain devices establish tracking systems that will enable them to promptly locate devices in commercial distribution. Tracking information may be used to facilitate notifications and recalls ordered by FDA in the case of serious risks to health presented by the devices.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Managing lot and expiry is\u00a0an important job and not an easy one\u00a0so here are some tips:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Always use FEFO\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2013<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>First Expiry<\/strong><strong>\/<\/strong><strong>First\u00a0<\/strong><strong>O<\/strong><strong>ut<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0That means always check stock to verify that you are pulling the first item that will expire. Rearrange product as needed to be in\u00a0the\u00a0order of expiry. This will reduce waste and save time going forward.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Always be on the lookout for recalls and safety n<\/strong><strong>otices<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Do not ignore this task, as it is paramount for patient safety and compliance. Always address recalls and notices ASAP.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Actively manage inventory<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Rotate stock, do cycle counts, verify expiry, and on-hand inventory counts. This can be done as frequently as necessary to\u00a0ensure compliance. Consider\u00a0using point-of-use\u00a0tracking software.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Monitor\u00a0<\/strong><strong>a<\/strong><strong>ctive inve<\/strong><strong>ntory<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Check product expiry on open boxes or currently in-use stock. Do not just check stocked boxes. Make sure staff is trained appropriately and that everyone understands the importance or expiry management.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Quantify losses associated with not tracking expired goods.<\/strong>\u00a0This includes financial loss to the organization and how it contributes to the waste in the industry as a whole.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>While these tips are useful, implementing a full program to manage\u00a0medical ancillary devices,\u00a0lot and expiry requires commitment and skill.
